Elected officials should listen to majority on ban
Published 12:59pm Thursday, December 21, 2006Representative Bud Nornes’ quotes regarding a statewide smoking ban deserve comment.
After his reelection he stated he was open to listening to all his constituents.
Well, he may be listening but he’s also completely ignoring the wishes of the overwhelming majority of Otter Tail County voters questioned in a scientific survey on the subject.
It’s just amazing how the conservative state of Arizona, where we spend winter months, voted last November in favor of a smoking ban in bars and restaurants and at the same time voted down a partial ban, heavily financed by R. J. Reynolds, tobacco’s attempt to smokescreen and weaken the proposal.
If Arizona can do it, Minnesota, the “progressive” state, can too.
It’s looking like County Commissioners Dennis Mosher, Roger Froemming, as well as Bud Nornes are bowing down to the interests of a few restaurants and bars.
Our elected representatives are not listening to the majority.
We have taken up the challenge, thrown out by the establishments that offer free smoke with their food and will not patronize them.
We urge others to do the same, lutefisk or no lutefisk.
