Play will celebrate Black History

Published 12:00pm Saturday, February 3, 2007

In 2005 A Center for the Arts asked Jena Company to stop at Fergus Falls with the production, My Soul is a Witness, the acclaimed chronicle of the Civil Rights Movement.

This year, on February 16th at 1 pm and 7:30, the story is continued with Jackie, Vi and Lena, three extraordinary people who stood up in the Civil Rights storm.

Jackie, of course, was the first black man to play Major League Baseball.

Viola (Vi) Liuzzo was so stirred by television reports of the brutal beatings of Civil Rights workers in Alabama that she drove more than a thousand miles to take part in the now legendary march from Selma to Montgomery. Bright, passionate and ahead of her time, she was the only white woman enshrined on the National Civil Rights monument.

Lena Horne, brilliant singer, stunning beauty and star of television, recordings, Broadway and theatres all over the world. Lena fought fiercely for civil rights, calling it as she saw it and telling it like it was.

’Jackie Vi and Lena’ brings us the richness of their world from jazz to baseball hysteria.

Jackie, Vi and Lena will run at 1 and 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16.

Advance tickets are $12 for an adult, $5 for a student. Tickets sold the day of the show will be $15 for an adult, and $5 for students.
