Taxes owed should be collected first
Published 12:00pm Wednesday, March 7, 2007The state should do everything it can to ensure that all taxes that are owed are being paid before considering raising taxes on the highest income bracket.
A proposal from Rep. Mindy Greiling, DFL-Roseville, would increase the top-tier income tax rate to 8.5 percent and use the additional revenue to fund education throughout the state. However, opponents to the proposal believe that more auditors working to collect taxes that are already owed could raise a similar amount.
Although the proposed tax hike isn’t overwhelming — after all, it restores the tax rate to what it was before 1999 — raising the necessary funds from those who aren’t paying their share should be the first priority. Increasing taxes should be a last resort.
