Hillcrest team offers community helping hand
Published 12:00pm Saturday, May 5, 2007Some local softball players are making an impact off the diamond by raising money to help the Salvation Army’s local school program.
Tim Jensen, coach of the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy softball team, was looking for a project which would let his players reach out to the community.
“The girls have been taking time to visit with people in person and making calls to raise awareness and funds for the Salvation Army,” Jensen said. “It’s been a total team effort.”
Team captains Emily Christianson and Melissa Christianson, who recently returned from a mission trip to Mexico, are now experiencing the effects of their work on a local level.
“It’s great to come back from helping others on our trip and help people in our own community,” Emily said.
Jensen is thankful to have a team so willing to help people in need. The funds raised will provide books, classroom studies, trips, jackets, clothes and other items to needy people.
“The girls I coach have such big, beautiful and giving hearts,” Jensen said. “I’m very fortunate to have this group.”
Plans are to make an act of charity part of the Hillcrest softball season every year. The football team has also been involved in charity during their season in the fall.
“Our school, as a whole, does outreach programs. We do a lot of wonderful things,” he said.
The Salvation Army of Fergus Falls is inviting the public to their “Change A Life,” fundraising luncheon from noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, at the Salvation Army Corps. The team will be there to present the funds they raised. Organizers ask anyone planning to attend to R.S.V.P., by calling Krista at 739-9692.
All donations will be matched up to $10,000 by the Otto Bremer Foundation.
