NYM art center hosts Prudence Johnson

Jazz performer Prudence Johnson returns to the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, Saturday May 12 at 8 p.m for the final concert of the Hot Jazz for Cold Nights series. Pianist Dan Choinard will accompany her.

Concert is $12 for adults, $10 for Cultural Center members and $5 for students. The event is sponsored by Toni Ebner.

The Creamery will be serving a pre-concert dinner from 6-7:30 pm that night.

Menu consists of chicken soup, choice of oriental chicken or peppersteak with choice of noodles or rice and a sweets and fruit dessert. Call The Creamery at 385-JAVA for reservations.

‘A Living Song’ postponed to Sunday

Due to a fire alarm malfunction at their venue, the Lake Agassiz Girls Choir had to re-schedule their spring concert, performance of “A Living Song,” from May 6 to Sunday, May 13. The concert is at 7 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 3636 25th Street South, Fargo.

The choirs will be accompanied by the Dakota Rose String Quartet and other guest instrumentalists.

The theme song was written by Dr. David Brunner who is also the composer that has been commissioned to write a piece for Cantare to be premiered during the 2007-2008 season.

Tickets are available by calling 701-491-3040 and will be available at the door. Concert tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Phelps Mill Festivaldates announced

The annual Phelps Mill Festival will be held July 14 and 15, 2007. The show is held at the Phelps Mill Park north of Underwood and south of Maine.

LRAC seeks applications from art centers for grants

The Lake Region Arts Council will be reviewing grants submitted for a support grant and making funding decisions on May 15.

Last winter, community arts organizations with operating expenses of less than $60,000 were invited to apply for an operating grant through the arts council.

Cultural center hosts jewelry making workshop

Directors wanted

The Historic Holmes Theatre (Detroit Lakes) is searching for directors for upcoming theatrical productions.

Three productions will be staged during the 07-08 season (October 2007, March 2008 and July 2008) and four will be staged during the 2008-09 season.

A detailed Request for Proposal document can be received by contacting Amy Stearns at 218-844-4221 Ext. 104. Proposals for the 07-08 season must be received by June 8, and proposals for the 08-09 season must be received by Aug. 1, 2008.

Auditions planned for 3 summer productions at Fergus arts center

Auditions for three summer play productions are planned in upcoming weeks.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Play with Sarah Helland, are scheduled May 14, 15 & 16.

Sign up for one of the following time slots: Monday and Wednesday at 4:30 or 5 p.m. or 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday at 6:30, 7 or 7:30 p.m.

Production dates are July 13 – 15 and July 20 – 22. (Sign Up At A Center for the Arts)

Cast members needed range from children through adults, ages 10 and up.

Beauty and the Beast, Directed by Scott Brusven, with vocal coaching by Michelle Danielson, open on May 22 at 4 p.m., May 23 at 7 p.m. Call backs will be May 24 at 7 p.m.
The production is Aug. 10 – 12 and Aug. 17 – 19.

This is the Disney Broadway musical version of “Beauty and the Beast” and requires a cast of all ages — children through adults. Come prepared to sing something, read something, and learn a short dance number.

Evansville Arts Center plans guest speaker

The Evansville Arts Coalition will host guest speaker, Myrna Stahman, an attorney and long-time knitter, at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 26, at the Evansville Coffeehouse Arts Center.

A resident of Boise, Idaho, and Pelican Lake at Ashby, she was raised in Herman. She practiced law for 30 years; the majority of which she did was criminal appeals representing the State of Idaho. During those years, she saw way too many cases involving domestic violence.

A long-time knitter, she now uses her hobby to bring awareness to the domestic violence issue by serving as the volunteer coordinator for the Sheila’s Shawls and Paul’s Scarves program, which victims of domestic violence.

She published a book, “Stahman’s Shawls and Scarves,” in 2000 and retired from the practice of law in August 2004.

Myrna has volunteered to present an informal hour-long free program on knitting shawls and scarves for the Sheila’s Shawls and Paul Scarves program — knitted, crocheted, woven, braided, or sewn shawls and scarves are made by volunteers and donated to victims of domestic violence.

She will remain at the art center until 2 p.m. to provide additional assistance to anyone interested in the project. She will have copies of patterns available along with a form that each person signs agreeing to volunteer to make and donate a shawl or a scarf for this project.

All completed shawls and scarves will then be donated to Someplace Safe, an organization for victims of domestic violence in several of our area communities.

The Coffeehouse Art Center is looking for people of all ages who are willing knit, crochet, weave, braid, or sew shawls or scarves or who are willing to learn to do so for this project. If you can not attend the program, but want to do a scarf or shawl for this project or have further questions, call Corinne at (218) 948-2377.

Two theaters partner to present premiere of ‘Gem of the Ocean’

Lou Bellamy and Joe Dowling announced today that the Penumbra Theatre Company production of August Wilson’s “Gem of the Ocean,” will be presented by the Guthrie in the McGuire Proscenium Stage in April 2008.

“The collaboration between Penumbra and the Guthrie allows us to come together to create something neither of us could do alone,” Artistic Director Lou Bellamy said. Partnering allows our particular experiences and areas of expertise to join forces, offering the community a unique opportunity to experience Wilson’s work at its best.”
