Irrigated pasture research update program scheduled for July 18
Published 12:00pm Thursday, July 12, 2007On Wednesday, July 18, an irrigated pasture research update program will be held at the Dan and Rosy and son Joel Middendorf dairy farm north of Verndale in Wadena County.
“This is the second year that a research project looking at the soil water profile of a intensive rotationally grazed dairy pasture is being researched,” New York Mills-based County Extension Educator Vince Crary said. “The economics of pasture irrigation is another portion of the study.”
Crary and two other University of Minnesota Extension employees — Jerry Wright and Margot Rudstrom — are involved with the research.
“We’ll have some very good speakers, including other local dairy producers who have irrigated pastures and who will talk about their systems,” Crary said. “Grazing specialists will talk about programs available to producers. The information provided will be of interest to producers from near and far.”
This research is funded by the Central Region Partnership and the Central Minnesota Irrigators Corporation.
A pasture walk will start at 10 a.m. and be completed about 2 p.m. Organizers are planning a noon meal that will be part of the program.
Call Crary at 218-385-3000 at the Otter Tail County Extension Office for questions about the project and to register in order for organizers to have a count for the noon meal. There is no cost for this program.
To get to the Middendorf dairy farm, drive seven miles straight north of Verndale on County Road 23, turn east on County Road 7 and go 3/4 mile. The dairy farm is on the north side of the road.
