Puppeteers leave something memorable

Presentations based on religious faith are many and varied. One that’s unique and which provides memories for a long time is a puppet presentation — including skits and music — coordinated by a Trinity Lutheran Church youth group.

The youths call themselves WAASUP, in reference to Worshipping An Awesome Savior Using Puppets.

Nine members comprise the group of performers, in its third year. This time of year they have a Christmas theme, with use of 20 puppets. One puppet, which is a real attention getter, is a talking camel.

“No matter what time of year, we convey the message of Christ,” WAASUP director Kyle Sorkness said. “We try hard to make each presentation special — and meaningful — for people who see us perform.”

Nathan Johnson said it’s also special to be part of a group that’s been the catalyst for lasting friendships. That observation was seconded by Sara Christianson and echoed by other members who gathered Wednesday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church.

“We never lose sight of the reason why we’re together — spreading the Christian message and conveying faith in Jesus,” WAASUP member Jared Salwei said.

The group performs before people and groups of all ages. Today at 4:15 p.m. they’ll perform before senior citizens at Park Gardens in northeast Fergus Falls.

People of all walks of life will be able to see WAASUP perform at Trinity Church at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 30. The group will mix puppets, music and skits between the 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services. The church is located at 1150 West Cavour, Fergus Falls.

“People in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area are welcome to come and watch us perform on the 30th at Trinity Church,” WAASUP director Kyle Sorkness said. “The invitation is open to everyone in this area.”

With word spreading about their unique performances, the WAASUP group also travels to locations out of town — the latest being Park Rapids.
