Safari display shows man’s love for self

In my opinion, the article, “Safari on display,” (Fergus Falls Daily Journal Feb. 14, 2008), reveals much more about the “gentleman” hunter’s love of self (narcissism) than it does his professed love of animals.

A true animal lover would not spend the better part of his/her life competing in a “Super Bowl” which has as its aim being a winner of the most-animals-slaughtered prize. Many of the animals on his hitlist are currently and have been on endangered or threatened lists throughout the world.

An “award” for killing the most animals world-wide? The Super Bowl of killing (uh, er, hunting)? Give me a break!

I suggest the bwana from Dalton and others of his ilk read the article, “Minds of their Own: Animals are smarter than you think,” in the March 2008 National Geographic. A quote from the article says it all: “This is the larger lesson of animal cognitive research: It humbles us. We are not alone in our ability to invent or plan or to contemplate ourselves- or even to plot and lie.”

If there is such a thing as karma, I believe the gentleman from Dalton and his buddies have much to look forward to.
