Clean car legislation gives buyers options
Published 12:00pm Thursday, April 3, 2008I must comment in regard to your March 20, article about the proposed Minnesota Clean Cars legislation. As debate over the adoption of the California clean standards heats up, many are worried about the effects on the auto industry. Here’s what we can expect for manufacturers.
We can expect that manufacturers will be able to offer more options to consumers with fuel-efficient SUVs, light trucks and minivans. These technologies already exist and the auto industry is able to apply them to heavier-duty vehicles.
We can expect that manufacturers will experience no compliance liability issues with ethanol blends. If anything, the cleaner car standards create additional incentives for ethanol use by providing credit to manufacturers for the use of E85 in vehicles.
Another important point of this legislation is that it will save the consumer money in fuel costs over the life of owning the vehicle.
Not to worry — under the cleaner car standards, the auto industry seems like it will be just fine!
