Favre and the All Star Game
Published 8:32am Monday, July 14, 2008-I haven’t wanted to comment on the Brett Favre reality show because I almost put that in the same category of A-Rod and Madonna. But since Favre is in our division this is news.
Unless you have been living under a rock somewhere, you have heard of Favre’s desire, or should I say “itch”, to return to the playing field. Supposedly he felt he was pushed out by the Packers and he wanted to go out on his own terms. Or, he is one of those athletes that find it hard to quit and just had to come back because he doesn’t know what else to do with himself.
I understand the urge to keep playing. I have done that myself late in my baseball career. I have quit for a year or maybe two then some how I miss it and find myself playing again. Even now that I have retired for a couple of years of both softball and baseball I still get the “itch”. The only difference now is that my body has finally told my brain that I can’t do it anymore.
If Favre does come back it will be interesting to see who he is playing for. The Packers have committed to Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback and have indicated that if Favre wants to come back in may be in a back up role. Now we all know that he isn’t going to want to do that. If they do release him, he could end up with the Vikings or the Bears who all play in the same division and the Packers don’t want that either.
I have said before that the Vikings would be a good fit for Favre and now the national media is saying the same thing. The Vikings are on the verge of making the Super Bowl and all they are missing is a proven quarterback. Tarvaris Jackson is the guy according to Viking staff and players but I’m sure they are just saying that to not upset the apple cart. I have to believe that anyone associated with the Vikings, except maybe T-Jack, would jump at the chance to have Favre on the team. Favre also has some friends on the team, with Darren Sharper, Brian Longwell, and quarterback coach Bevell so it is not out of line that Favre would want to sign here, not to mention their chances for a Super Bowl game.
What would also be interesting is if he does sign with the Vikings is the first game of the season when the Vikings play the Packers. This was supposed to be the game when the Packers retire his number. I wonder if they still would if he was playing for the other team.
-The All Star baseball game is tomorrow and the Twins have three players on the squad. Joe Mauer was elected to start and Justin Morneau and Joe Nathan were also selected to play. Most All Star games in any sport aren’t the most exciting game, but I have always thought the baseball All Star game was more entertaining than the rest.
I have a CD of the 1971 baseball All Star game complete with commercials and everything. The game had 23 future Hall of Famers in it to make it a true All Star event. The game was played in old Detroit stadium with lots of home runs being hit including one by Harmon Killebrew and one by Reggie Jackson that cleared the roof.
