Bad seeds made stands unfeasible
Published 12:00pm Tuesday, July 15, 2008It is true that food prices have increased significantly in recent months. However, that fact seems to be a poor excuse for the fact that Bluebird Gardens owners Mark and Diane Boen had to stop their self-service stands due to an increase in theft.
For eight years, the Boens have provided self-service vegetable stands at several locations around Fergus Falls. Because the stands made it very convenient for nearby residents to get fresh locally grown vegetables daily, most paid happily for them, in fact, even more than the price the Boens were asking.
However, starting a couple years ago, those whose intentions were less honorable took advantage of the system. Clearly, over the last year, the “bad seeds” have increased to the point where some self-service stands have been financially unfeasible.
Residents were proud that the Bluebird Gardens honor system worked as long as it did. They should also feel disappointed that, due to a few, it has failed, and because it has, will unlikely be tried again.
