Cub Scouts complete Underwood service project
Published 12:00pm Monday, July 28, 2008Pack 325 Cub Scouts in Underwood, seeing the many potential benefits to their community, worked this past weekend to clean and perform various projects at Centennial Park, prior to this year’s Harvest Festival celebration.
“The boys are learning about service to others in our community through scouting,” Cubmaster Doug Hansen said. “Our pack wanted to paint the caboose and playground equipment, repair the boardwalk and clean up Centennial Park as a community service project this summer.”
It was a big job spread over parts of three days — on Thursday, Friday and Saturday — while the scouts worked at Centennial Park. The pack received a lumber donation and Valspar Corp. donated the paint for the caboose and playground equipment, including the play tower.
“Later, the manager at Home Depot got back to me and told me they would be donating lumber, screws, brushes, thinner and other supplies,” Hansen said.
The group held a picnic on Saturday after the work was completed.
On Thursday evening the pack, which includes 23 boys and 11 volunteer adult leaders, used prep and primer, also making repairs to the boardwalk. On Friday evening the group painted playground equipment and the caboose. Saturday afternoon was set aside for cleaning up glass, trash etc., prior to the picnic.
“I noticed an article about a paint grant from Valspar Corp. and West Central Initiative last February,” Hansen said. “Our pack approached the Underwood City Council with the idea. The council was all for it.”
Next year the city council hopes to raise funds through local organizations to replace the stage and boardwalk.
Cub Scouting is for boys in the first through fifth grades, those 7 to 10 years of age. Boys who are older than 10, or who have completed the fifth grade, are eligible to join the Boy Scout or Venturing programs.
Cub Scouts meet in their dens once each week, and a pack meeting is held for all Cub Scouts and their families once a month. Beyond that, service projects are planned and there are special events such as the annual Blue and Gold awards and recognition banquet.
