Friends: Film jeopardizes RTC

Monday’s council decision to delay approval of a film at the RTC was good news to the Friends of the Kirkbride, a group that has voiced opposition to the project.

Many Friends attended Monday’s meeting, though most chose not to speak. Friends member Maxine Schmidt presented the council with a petition of 3,600 signatures she’s collected since 2005 in support of saving the Kirkbride. Later Schmidt said she’s concerned a one-time film could jeopordize the RTC’s larger development project.

“We’re looking at long-term economic development, here,” she said.

Jean Bowman of the Fergus Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau has said the two projects are not mutually exclusive, a sentiment she echoed at Monday’s meeting.

This morning Bowman said she was pleased Kaufman had the opportunity to share more about the film.

“I think last night the film crew really answered a lot of great questions,” she said. “I respect the coucil’s decision to make an informed decision.”

The responsibility is now on Campus Development Group to specify why it is opposed to the film, she said, as the group had no organized presence at the meeting Monday. A separate meeting between the council and members of CDG is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 18.

“Hopefully the CDG will have some more clarity for the council,” Bowman said.
