Carter Ryan Retzlaff, 8-month-old son of Ryan and Heidi (Ver Steeg) Retzlaff of Fergus Falls, died suddenly and unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008 at the Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.

Carter was born April 10, 2008 in Fergus Falls. In his 8 months of life, he brought untold amounts of love, joy, and laughter to all those around him. Carter would light up the room with his big blue eyes and his bright beautiful smile.

Carter loved his family dearly and would squeal with delight when a loved one entered the room. Nothing made him happier than spending time with Mom and Dad. Some of his favorite things to do were to play peek-a-boo by the railing with his mom, and to waltz and sing in the living room with his dad.

Carter was so inquisitive, and loved to have books read to him. He was fascinated and drawn to the lighted Christmas tree and brightly colored nativity set.

Carter’s life was filled with hugs and kisses, both given and received. He would reach out to touch a loved one’s face, and would snuggle in contentment when held close. The loss of sweet baby Carter leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed, always loved, and never forgotten.

We are only comforted in knowing Carter is in the arms of Jesus Christ, and that one day we will be reunited with him.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents Roy and Martha Retzlaff, Deloris Kruize, Vera and Harold Ver Steeg, and Walter and Dorothy Christianson.

Survivors include his parents, Ryan and Heidi Retzlaff of Fergus Falls; his grandparents: Dave and Deb Retzlaff, and Bruce and Joanie Ver Steeg, all of Fergus Falls; his great-grandfather, Peter Kruize of Fergus Falls, and three uncles, Jason Retzlaff and Justin Retzlaff, both of Fergus Falls, and James and Lucinda Ver Steeg of Richfield and their daughter, Estee; and numerous great aunts and uncles, and a host of friends.
