Journal wins General Excellence award
Published 6:00am Saturday, January 31, 2009The Fergus Falls Daily Journal won second place in the General Excellence category in the 2007-08 Minnesota Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest Thursday.
The Journal received the award at the annual MNA Convention in Bloomington.
The Journal finished second to the Owatonna People’s Press among 10 entries in the category of Dailies up to 8,000 circulation. Judges’ comments were as follows: “Good looking paper. Consistently good looking with each page turn. Clean looking newspaper. Good job.”

The Parkers Prairie Independent placed first for Typography and Design among weeklies up to 1,500 circulation, second for Best Headline Writing and first for Best Classified Advertising Section for weeklies up to 2,500,
The Citizens Advocate of Henning won second place for Advertising Excellence for weeklies up to 1,500,
The Pelican Rapids Press won first place for Advertising Excellence for weeklies 2,501-5,000, and Tammy Magnusson of the Pelican Rapids Press won first for Best Use of Color in Advertising for weeklies up to 3,000,
Anne O’ Flynn of the Grant County Herald in Elbow Lake won first place for Best Institutional Ad for weeklies up to 4,000 and first place for weeklies 1,501 to 2,500 for Best Advertisement,
Fergus Falls native Steve Schulz of the Wadena Pioneer Journal won first place for weeklies 2,501 to 5,000 for Best Sports Feature and Action Photo.
Former Fergus Falls Daily Journal reporter Lawrence Schumacher, now at the St. Cloud Times, won second place for Best Local News Story among dailies over 10,000,
Carol Clauson of the Verndale Sun won second for Best Self-Promotion or House Ad.
