Job-seekers find resources through employment club
Published 12:00pm Tuesday, March 17, 2009About 70 people filled M State’s Legacy Hall Monday night for the kick-off of the Lakes Area Job Club.
The two-hour event gave local job seekers the opportunity to visit with representatives from sectors including hospitality, retail, health care and manufacturing.
Cindy Torgerson and Marie Butler of Rothsay have been looking for work since losing their jobs with Imation last September.
“It’s nice to know what’s available,” said Torgerson, who was pleasantly surprised to see some businesses are hiring.
One of them is Mill Street Residence. Director Mick Siems said he told job seekers he’ll consider applicants with the right attitude, even if they require in-house training.
“I hire more for who is going to be a good fit,” he said.
Monday’s kick-off also included displays by Fergus Falls Community Education and the public library. Library Director Walt Dunlap was on-hand to talk with job seekers about library resources.
“Mostly we talked with people who had some familiarity with the library, but didn’t have an idea of how broad our services are,” he said. “We hope we’ve introduced them to some things that will help them in their job searches.”
Designed to be a support group for local job seekers, the Lakes Area Job Club will meet for the first time March 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the library. Anyone interested in learning more about the Job Club may contact the Minnesota WorkForce Center at 739-7675. Participation in the group is free.
