April 15: Business as usual at the FF post office

As the looming deadline for filing taxes approached Wednesday the post office was once a busy place.

While the past few days have been busier than most days, it’s nothing the post office can’t handle, according to Postmaster Brad Beck.

Tax Day at the Post Office isn’t what it once was where mail carriers held long hours and stood outside accepting tax returns from a steady stream of cars filled with tax filers who pushed the filing deadline to the limit.

Those days have been long gone since the Internet and e-filing have become popular ways of filing taxes.

There is a benefit to filing online that taxpayers have found, too.

Those who are filing electronically can expect a return in about five business days, compared with several weeks for paper filers.

The post office staff hasn’t had any issues to the point where the post office has had to remain open late to collect taxes from residents, Beck said.

“Overall, it’s like a normal day,” Beck said.

Despite the ability to file taxes electronically, “we still get a lot of taxes through the mail,” Beck said.
