Henning is part of a new wave sweeping across the United States, with people close to retirement age and those past the age of 62 moving to new communities and taking up new careers. Such is the case for Terry and Nancy Oseien and Delmer and Nancy Landgraff.

The Oseiens moved to Henning from Florida and the Landgraffs formerly resided in Ohio.

Terry Oseien, 60, and Nancy Oseien, 57, who lived most of their adult lives in Orlando, Fla., opened Spark’s Discount Liquor in Henning in October 2008.

In Florida, Terry was a civil engineer and Nancy worked as an office manager for a refrigeration company and also for AT&T. They lived for a while in Pensacola, Fla.

“My brother, Ben, has lived here (Henning area) for 30 years,” Terry said. “My mother lives in Henning and, with family up this way, we enjoyed vacationing here over the years.”

Ben Oseien owns B&D’s Foods in Henning.

Terry retired two years ago and a few months ago got wind of a business opportunity in Henning. That’s when he and Nancy decided to start second careers.

They renovated a building on main street, obtained a liquor license from the city and things have gone well the past few months at Spark’s Discount Liquor.

Terry was born in Bloomington, Minn., and grew up in St. Petersburg, Fla. Nancy hails from Nitro, W.Va. They a daughter and family who live in Florida.

Six years ago Delmer and Nancy Landgraff moved from Ohio, to Henning. Delmer, 73, had worked on diesel engines in Wilmington, Ohio. Nancy, 66, worked for a plastics molding plant (Hutamaki) in New Vienna, Ohio.

Delmer now operates DNL Welding in Henning, working about five to six hours each day.

What lured them to Henning six years ago was family. Delmer’s father lived with a cousin near Parkers Prairie and reached the age of 95 before his death.

“We both enjoy living in Henning and what’s offered in parts of Otter Tail County,” said Nancy.

She walks their four-year-old dog, Clover, a female (mixture of black lab and husky) four times a day.

“Walking five to six miles per day, with Clover, is good exercise for me,” said Nancy “Clover had eight puppies two years ago; each of them went to a loving home.”

Both couples emphatically say they made the right decision to move to Henning, including the Oseiens who say they enjoy the four seasons of the year.
