Campground has unique setting

After a long winter, visitors to Tipsinah Mounds Park and Campground, east of Elbow Lake, look forward to campfires. During an average weekend during the summer months, manager Scott Cleveland sells 25 piles of wood.

“I cut the wood myself,” said Cleveland, who has worked 13 years as manager. “People want to be outdoors, and nothing beats a nice campfire at the end of the day.”

Cleveland is a Kansas native who has 25 years experience in the park service business. His wife, Jul, is from Elbow Lake and they both enjoy the outdoors during the summer months in Grant County. They live at the park with their two children, Robin, 13, and Dawn, 11.

Tipsinah Mounds Park and Campground is owned and operated by the City of Elbow Lake. The park and campground are located near Pomme de Terre Lake.

“A beautiful area,” said Cleveland who is busy getting things ready for the 2009 season.

Along with chopping wood, he also prepares the public swimming beach, playground equipment and hiking and nature trails — for the influx of guests coming from throughout Minnesota and other areas of the nation.

The city has a public boat launch at Tipsinah, over 25 RV camping sites (electricity and water), tenting sites, a general store and good fishing. For the safety and peace of mind of its guests, Tipsinah has on-premise caretakers and regular police patrols.

As for things to do, in addition to camping, swimming and nearby golf, there’s volleyball, hay rides, horseshoes, nature trails, basketball and pet walking areas.

Brochures and web site analysis offer insight as to what makes Tipsinah Mounds Park and Campground something very special: “Spacious grounds, whispering leaves, gurgling waters, warming sunrises and quiet sunsets blend with the history of Native Americans. Come share some time in our part of the world. We promise respite and quality facilities.”
