A new Mexican restaurant is scheduled to open in Fergus Falls later this month.

El Tequila Mexican Restaurant is to open at 524 Western Ave., the former site of Speedway Bar and Grill. The Fergus Falls City Council approved a liquor license for the establishment Monday.

A restaurant by the same name currently operates out of Baxter. According to the Brainerd Dispatch, El Tequila is a family run restaurant that opened in Baxter last fall. Pedro Unzueta, a partner in the restaurant, told the newspaper he’d been in the restaurant business for about 15 years and that the family has two other restaurants in the South.

The restaurant uses fresh ingredients and flavorful spices to create authentic Mexican fare, according to the Dispatch. The menu includes lunches, dinners, appetizers, seafood, vegetarian dishes and salads. Desserts include flan (vanilla Mexican custard), sopapillas (fried flour tortillas with honey, cinnamon and chocolate syrup) and xangos (creamy cheesecake wrapped in a pastry tortilla, fried and dusted with cinnamon and sugar).

Menu prices range from $3 to $4 for a salad to $6 lunch specials to dinners costing $8 to $12. A list of 30 combination options, mixing choices like burritos, tacos and enchiladas, are $8 or $8.50, according to the Brainerd Dispatch.

An employee at the restaurant Monday said the family had been encouraged by the success of the Baxter location. They had received comments from people suggesting they open another restaurant in Fergus Falls, he said.
