Jury finds dealer guilty
Published 10:54am Friday, July 3, 2009A jury found a Fergus Falls man guilty of selling methamphetamine in a trial that ended Thursday.
Todd Jeffery Kadel, 42, was convicted on five drug-related charges, as well as charges of tampering with a witness and endangerment of a child. The drug charges included first, second and third degree sales crimes and first degree possession.
Kadel was arrested in November after authorities with the West Central Minnesota Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at a Fergus Falls apartment. There authorities found more than 97 grams of methamphetamine, including packaging, as well as thousands of dollars in cash, according to a complaint. Kadel and another person at the apartment, Julie Ann Burns, were arrested. Mavis Marlene Wiese, a resident of the apartment, was later arrested and pleaded guilty to a first degree controlled substance crime.
Jurors heard arguments in the Kadel case beginning earlier this week and reached a verdict after three hours of deliberation Thursday. Kadel, who asked to speak following the verdict, told Judge Lisa Borgen he contests the validity of the search warrant that led to his arrest and the charges against him. Another court will take Kadel’s objection into account should he decide to appeal his sentencing, Borgen said.
Kadel’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for Aug. 21.
