A balancing act

Published 6:00am Sunday, August 30, 2009

As we grow older and enter into that senior age, we are often aware of being somewhat less “sure-footed.” Sometimes it requires a bit of a “fancy-dance” to remain erect. At other times, it can become more serious, actually falling with resulting bruises, bumps or even worse — broken bones.

But help is on the way. Beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 9-11 a.m., Kim Shea and Diane Scott will lead a class called, “A Matter of Balance,” for eight weeks which emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls. As a participant, you will learn to view falls as controllable. You will learn to make changes to reduce fall risks at home and through proper exercise, increase strength and balance. Sign up for this class by calling 736-6842. Deadline for registration is Sept. 7. The class is free to members and $5 for non-members.

The Red Hats have a terrific trip planned for next Thursday, Sept. 3 — Maplewood Park to see the reds, browns and golds of fall leaves. Meet in the parking lot behind the Senior Center at 10 a.m. and car pool from there. (Cost is $5 per car load.) After the beautiful scenic drive, enjoy lunch — possibly in Pelican Rapids.

John Armstrong will again be at the Center at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the 9th, to offer free ear wax check and hearing aid cleaning. Call 736-6842 for an appointment.

The Senior Center is still collecting old cell phones for the Cellular Recycling Program which reimburses us for every phone we collect. Our first shipment earned $60 for our Activity Fund. There is no point in hanging on to the old phones no longer in use. Bring them to the Senior Office.

Have you given anyone a hug lately? Remember, a hug is a great gift. One size fits all. It can be given for any occasion and is easy to exchange.
