Amazing Grace
Published 8:57am Thursday, December 17, 2009It’s a common understanding in Kirk and Wendy Reiten family that on Christmas Day, the two won’t be around in the early afternoon for regular celebrations.
Kirk and Wendy Reiten, like many other dedicated volunteers, traditionally spend their Christmas Day volunteering at Grace United Methodist’s community Christmas Day Dinner.
“We were hooked after the first time,” said Wendy, who has been volunteering with their husband for the past eight years.
For the past 27 years, the church has hosted the dinner, which generally attracts some 300 people throughout the community.
The reasons for those who attend are many. Some, for years, have attended the event with their families. Others, who may not have the opportunity to share Christmas with their loved ones, are able to sit down and enjoy a meal with company.
“It’s nice to have something done like this on Christmas Day,” Wendy said.
Though a lot of hard work goes into preparation for the event, the Dumkes, who co-chair the event, say those who volunteer genuinely enjoy what they do.
“A lot of the people volunteering just come in year after year,” Wendy said. “It’s a tradition for many people. It’s like family.”
Around 30 volunteers generally contribute to the event, with tasks ranging from cooks and servers to delivery drivers and organizers.
In addition to the annual sit down meal held at the church, meals are also delivered to those in the community who call to request services.
Though it is suggested that people call ahead of time, volunteers will make every effort to provide food for anyone in need.
Orders can be made by calling the church at 218-739-2269.
Festivities will begin Christmas Day with 11:30 a.m. worship. Dinner will be served at noon.
Free will donations will be accepted at the dinner, with Thrivent Financial pledging to match all donations.
Donations from the dinner will be dispersed to the Food Shelf, Salvation Army and The Matthew House.
