More work along Ditch 37, which runs north of Norway Lake, north of Underwood, is needed, said Land and Resource Director Bill Kalar to members of the Otter Tail County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday. The board later approved the contractor to perform additional work along a ditch between Bass Lake and Onstead Lake.

Ditch 37 currently serves as the drainage system. In previous months the work has included replacement of tile and other projects. The work approved Tuesday by the county board also will include repair of tiles.

Also on Tuesday, Kalar reported that his office would like to apply for a state block grant totaling $101,717. The funds would be used for assistance to the county for its water plan, wetlands conservation and shoreland management programs.

Kalar also reported that terms of four members of the County Planning Commission will expire in the near future.

The commission works in coordination with the Land and Resource Department and County Board of Commissioners to regulate the use and orderly development of shorelands in Otter Tail County, to prevent and eliminate pollution of public waters and to maintain historic values of significant historic sites. Legal authority comes from Minnesota Statutes’ Chapter 394 and in accordance with the authority granted in Minnesota Statutes 103G, 115 and 116.

Terms ending Dec. 31, 2009, include Marion Gill, Joe Maske, Bert Kinzler and Leona Zimmerman. Terms expiring in December 2010 include Bert Olson, Robert Schwartz, Rick Wilson and Rod Boyer. Members whose terms expire in December 2011 include David Trites and Ken Erickson.
