Boys basketball roundup: Comets rout Rothsay
Published 1:18am Wednesday, January 27, 2010The Hillcrest boys basketball team ran its win streak to six games with a dominating 78-25 win over Little Eight Conference rival Rothsay Tuesday night in Fergus Falls.
The Tigers held a 13-12 lead 10 minutes into the first half before the Comets began to pull away.
“Every time we would make an adjustment for guys currently on the floor, three or even five players would enter off the bench for Hillcrest,” Rothsay coach Darren Rogness said.
The Hillcrest pressure defense forced 27 Rothsay turnovers, holding the Tigers to just two field goals in the second half.
“Our guys were able to get some easy looks in transition that helped us pull away,” Hillcrest coach Gregg Preston said.
Devon Apgar and Jared Schultz each finished with 14 points for the Comets, Apgar pulling down a team best seven rebounds and Schultz grabbing four steals.
Josh Wolderich also finished in double-figures with 12 points.
Cody Hanneman had nine points, four rebounds, three assists, five steal and one block for the Tigers.
Hawley 59, Pelican Rapids 47
HAWLEY— Five straight possessions ending in Vikings’ turnovers inside three minutes to play ended the Pelican Rapids comeback in this Heart O’Lakes Conference matchup Tuesday night.
Trailing 42-40 late in the second half, Vikings’ guard Casey Bruggeman drove and missed on a contested lay-up attempt.
For the game, the Vikings committed 17 turnovers.
Taylor Budke led the Vikings with 10 points while Dan Wood and Brady Morgan finished with eight.
Battle Lake 57, Brandon-Evansville 31
BATTLE LAKE— A solid defensive effort lifted the Battlers over the Chargers in a Little Eight Conference matchup Tuesday night.
Adam Marso had a team best 20 points for the Battlers.
D-G-F 65, WCA 60
GLYNDON — The Knights dropped a critical Heart O’Lakes Conference game against the Rebels.
West Central fell to 6-5 in league play with the loss while D-G-F drew a game closer and reached the .500-mark at 5-5 in the HOL.
The Rebels, who led 33-21 at the break, pulled away from beyond the arc, canning 7 of 13 shots from deep and 22 of 47 overall.
The Knights made just 5 of 17 shots from deep and 22 of 52 overall. Sam Richards led the Knights with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Colton Blascyk added 13 points.
Ashby 50, Parkers Prairie 48
ASHBY — Despite shooting just 30 percent from the field, the Arrows picked up a pivotal Little Eight Conference victory.
Riley Mickelson and Jon Quernemoen each tallied 14 points for the Arrows (4-7 overall, 3-3 LEC) while Mickelson grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Ryan Peppersack, Chuck Bates and Arnie Thoennes scored 11 points apiece for Parkers Prairie (3-7, 2-4).
Wheaton 53,Underwood 52
UNDERWOOD— Riley Wilson split a pair of foul shots with sixth tenths of a second remaining to lift the Warriors over the Rockets in a non-conference affair Tuesday night.
