ROTHSAY — The Battle Lake boys basketball team put the breaks on a three-game Little Eight Conference losing streak with an overwhelming 63-27 victory over Rothsay Friday evening.

“We got off to a good start and were able to beat their press for some easy transition baskets,” said Battle Lake coach Dan Peterka. “We had a pretty balanced attack at both ends tonight.”

Three players tallied at least nine points for the Battlers (8-9, 5-4 LEC), led by Marty Charest’s 16 points. Alex Ukkelberg and Jake Ukkelberg scored 10 each and Dan Marso added nine.

The Battlers — who shot 56 percent from the field — forced 28 turnovers and held the Tigers’ offense to just three assists.

Cody Hanneman accounted for 78 percent of Rothsay’s offense with 21 points on 9 of 19 shooting. He also collected nine rebounds.

The victory sends Battle Lake into a two-way tie with Brandon-Evansville for second place in the Little Eight behind unbeaten Hillcrest.

The Tigers remain winless in 18 games.

Battle Lake hosts Underwood Friday evening while Rothsay plays fifth-ranked Park Christian Academy Thursday at home.

UNDERWOOD — The Rockets avenged an early-season blowout loss to the Chargers with a narrow Little Eight Conference victory.

Underwood — which lost by 31 points to Brandon-Evansville on Jan. 12 — out-scored the Chargers 15-5 from the charity stripe and turned the ball over just nine times to secure the victory.

“This was a big one,” Underwood coach Curt Olson said. “We did an excellent job of securing every possession and getting good shots. They played us zone the first time and it caused us problems. Tonight we did a better job of getting into the creases and converting.”

The Rockets (9-11, 5-5 LEC) — who shot 17-for-38 (45 percent) from the field — were led by Dalton Jampsa’s double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Phil Krueger notched 12 points for the Chargers (5-15, 5-4).

Underwood travels to Battle Lake Friday evening.

West Central (12-7, 9-6 HOL) , which out-scored Breckenridge 20-11 from the stripe, connected on just 33 percent of its shots from the field while allowing the Cowboys (16-4, 11-3) to shoot 50 percent.

Summerville scored 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out five assists and collected three steals while 6-foot-6 teammate Tehfehr scored 14 points and pulled down 11 boards.

FRAZEE — An equal-opportunity offense was too much for the Hornets to overcome as the Vikings ran away with a comfortable Heart O’ Lakes victory.

Taylor Budke (16 points), Casey Bruggeman (12), Dan Wood (10) and Luke Halbakken (10) joined Huseby in double figures.
