Washek reaches 1,000 career college points
Published 10:49pm Monday, February 15, 2010St. Bonifacius — Underwood native and University of Minnesota-Morris senior womens basketball player Nikki Washek tallied her 1,000th career point in Cougars’ 75-40 victory over Crown College Jan. 25.
Washek scored her first 592 points for NJCAA Division I North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, N.D., and the next 408 for the Cougars after transferring to UM-Morris last season.
Washek came into the game with 986 career points. The milestone mark came on a three-point shot from the left wing with 8:52 left in the first half. Washek came off a pick from junior Steph Roggenbuck to fire the historic attempt.
The Cougar bench had been charting Washek’s progress. Head coach Tim Grove called for a 30-second timeout after the basket.
“We just wanted to take a moment to recognize her accomplishment. The Crown P.A. made an announcement. We were all really happy for Nikki.”
Coming into this season, the ever-self-effacing Washek had to be reminded of her point total.
“Coach had mentioned I was close last year but I forgot about. I’m kind of glad for it to be over with,” she said after the game.
Washek’s accomplishment was the highlight of an overall tremendous evening for UMM. Twelve of 13 Cougars scored points and the entire team played at least six minutes in the contest. Roggenbuck and Washek paced UMM with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
