ROTHSAY—The Hillcrest boys basketball team’s winning streak hit seven games with a 70-37 rout of Rothsay in a Little Eight Conference contest on Friday night.

The Tigers trailing by just 14 at the break before the Comets began to pull away in the second half.

“Hillcrest’s intense defense wears on you pretty quickly,” Rothsay coach Darren Rogness said. “Their deep bench was just too much for us as the game went on.”

Devon Apgar led the Comets with 15 points while point guard Jared Schultz added 12 points and five steals.

Comets’ forward Andrew Hohncke also finished in double-figures with 11 points and five assists.

Rothsay senior Cody Hanneman had a game-high 20 points to go along with nine rebounds, four steals, three assists and one block.

Hillcrest (17-2) shot 49 percent from the floor and 56 percent from both the free throw line and long distance.

Rothsay shot 45 percent from the field, but attempted just 29 shots from the floor and committed 26 turnovers.

The Comets, who already wrapped up a LEC championship, finished a perfect 12-0 in LEC play this season.

“Tonight was a nice way to close out the conference schedule,” Hillcrest coach Gregg Preston said. “With the exception of us, the rest of the conference was pretty young this season, but still it’s tough to run the table and the guys are pretty excited about that.”

Rothsay, the 2008-2009 LEC champions, have now lost 23 consecutive games dating back to last season’s first round playoff loss to New York Mills.

Hillcrest has two games remaining before embarking on the sectional tournament.

On Tuesday, the Comets travel to Hancock before ending the regular season with showdown with Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley March 5.
