Boys basketball: Battlers move on
Published 10:50pm Monday, March 8, 2010BATTLE LAKE — It wasn’t perfect, but it will do.
Despite falling behind early on and scoring just 21 points in the second half, the third-seeded Battle Lake boys basketball team was able to hold off No. 10 Parkers Prairie in the opening round of the Section 6-1A Tournament Monday evening.
The victory sets up a confrontation with third-seeded Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Thursday evening.
“We started a little sluggish,” Battle Lake coach Dan Peterka said. “We had to battle back from an early deficit. In the end, though, we did what we needed to do to get the win.”
Alex Ukkelberg led the charge for the Battlers (13-11), scoring 14 points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out five assists. Adam Marso added six points and 12 rebounds while Marty Charest and Zach Wilkie chipped in with nine points apiece.
“We were pretty balanced on the offensive end,” Peterka said. “We were able to get stops defensively.”
The 44 points allowed by Battle Lake was the Panthers’ lowest offensive output in five games.
Ryan Peppersack and Arnie Thoenes were the only two Parkers Prairie players to reach double-figures in scoring, registering 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The victory ensures the first winning season for Battle Lake since the 2006-07 season.
