Rothsay cuts Spanish
The Rothsay School District has made the move to cut its Spanish program.
At the school board meeting Tuesday evening, a motion to discontinue the school’s Spanish program was approved.
“Although we would prefer to offer it, due to budget cuts we can no longer offer that,” said Superintendent Dr. Mary Donohue-Stetz.
That will mean there will be no options for students interested in taking a second language through the district.
Lori Castens is the current Spanish teacher for the district.
The State of Minnesota does not require that a school district offer a second language.
Donohue-Stetz said the district will instead focus more on technology-related education.
Trades course takes on new project
The school board discussed plans on how the construction trades courses will handle class projects.
In the past, students have built houses. Because of difficulty in selling project homes, students have instead opted to build sheds and garages for those in the community.
The board is considering allowing students to build a new press box for the football field, which would be available for use by the 2010 football season.
Assistant coaches considered
The school board discussed the possibility of for the first time hiring assistant coaches for the track and golf teams.
In the past, the school has paired with Barnseville for both track and golf.
The board made no action.
Battle Lake School District
The Battle Lake School Board approved Jeff Drake as superintendent of the Battle Lake School District, starting the 2010-11 school year.
The board approved a motion Monday to work on a contract for Drake’s new position.
The board has not yet made a decision regarding the structure of the administrative team for the 2010-11 school year.
That means it’s not yet sure if another principle will be hired to take Drake’s place.
“We’re looking at that administrative make-up and look at what really will be best for us,” said board member Theresa Ukkelberg.
A decision regarding the administrative structure will be made at the board’s next meeting at 6:30 p.m., April 19 at the Battle Lake School.
Elementary teaching position eliminated
The board approved a motion to eliminate a teaching position by not filling a position which will become vacant at the end of this school year through the retirement of Tanya Hensch.
