Camp Fire notes 100 years

Published 6:00am Sunday, March 21, 2010

Young and old alike stopped for cake at WestRidge Mall Saturday to help Camp Fire USA celebrate its 100th birthday.

“We’ve had a lot of fun today, as we celebrate our centennial,” said Janet Grulke, Camp Fire district director, Fergus Falls, whose Moccasin Valley District includes Camp Fire units in Otter Tail, Douglas and Grant counties. “This also has given us the opportunity to educate people about the objectives and goals of Camp Fire USA.”

The motto this year is, “A Century of Kids — A Future of Leaders, 1910-2010.”

Camp Fire USA was founded a century ago by Charlotte and Luther Gulick, MD, in Vermont, as the first non sectarian organization for girls in the United States. Boys have been allowed to join the organization since 1975.

Locally, those interested in Camp Fire participation can call the Moccasin Valley District Office in Fergus Falls at 218-736-3027. The e-mail address is campfireusamv@juno.com
