M State makes enrollment easy
Published 2:31pm Friday, July 30, 2010Zaquia Taylor woke up at 5 a.m. Friday to drive with her parents from St. Paul to visit the Fergus Falls campus of Minnesota State Community and Technical College.
The 18-year-old incoming freshman was able to take assessment tests, get financial aid and housing information and register for classes all in one day as part of M State’s 1Stop2Enroll session.
“We love it,” her dad Courtland Stewart said. “Coming from the Twin Cities three hours away to get it all done in one day is great.”
At a typical 1Stop2Enroll session, which is between around 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Enrollment Manager Kyle Johnston said students could take any needed assessment tests, complete an online orientation and take part in what M State calls the “Great Spartan Race,” during which students would go through a checklist of things to do, such as visit the bookstore and library and get information on housing, student life, student services and financial aid. Finally, they spoke one-on-one with an adviser and registered for classes.
“What’s great about it is the convenience option,” Johnston said. “A lot of people come in from far away and it enables them to come in one day and get everything done.”
Taylor decided to attend M State because she loves basketball, her dad said, and a lot of schools she looked at didn’t have a women’s team. Her friend from the Twin Cities also took part in 1Stop2Enroll and after getting housing information, the two are planning to live in a dorm together.
“It’s cool, I like it,” Taylor said. “It’s not really big like a university in the cities. It seems like you’ll be able to get a lot of help.”
She plans on finishing her liberal arts generals at M State and then transferring to a criminal justice program.
A second 1Stop2Enroll session at the Fergus Falls campus takes place beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 19. Students should bring official transcripts from their high school and any colleges they have attended.
