The run towards a State championship came to an end for the Fergus Falls Hurricanes Friday night in an 11-1, seven inning loss to Big Lake in the Class C State Tournament in Bird Island.

Big Lake, who had knocked off Sartell, 6-3, in the first round, received a solid pitching performance from Wade Reichmann, who went all seven innings, scattering seven hits with no walks and nine strike outs.

The White Caps struck for three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. They added a single run in the third before opening up the game with two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings for a 8-0 lead.

The Hurricanes finally got on the board in the top of the sixth. Derek Hanson and Mic Johnson singled to put runners in first and third for Nate Meissner, a draftee from Brandon-Evansville, who singled in Hanson.

Fergus Falls had threats going in the second inning as well, but left two runners on base. For the game, the ‘Canes left seven men on base.

Big Lake scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win by 10-run rule.

Meissner was 3-for-3 for the ‘Canes, driving in the lone run. Alex Conboy, Casey Bovkoon, Hanson and Johnson each had one hit a piece for Fergus Falls.

Big Lake now enters the double elimination portion of the tournament, where they will take on Moorhead today in Willmar.
