25 years of Morning Son to be celebrated [UPDATED]
Published 7:16am Friday, September 24, 2010 Updated 11:24am Friday, September 24, 2010Morning Son Christian School will celebrate the launch of its foundation and its 25th anniversary at a banquet this Sunday evening.
Several speakers, a short video, music and food will be part of the event, held in the sanctuary at the First Church of the Nazarene, located at 1319 N. Cleveland Ave.
The school decided to establish a foundation because, over the last year, the school board has been looking for creative ways to establish long-term financial stability for the school, said Laurie Seay, a parent and board member at Morning Son who helped organize the banquet.
“We found the development of the foundation to be the answer,” she said. “It exists to provide fiscal resources so the school can continue to realize its mission of excellence in Christian education.”
Through the foundation, the school also hopes to provide more scholarships and increase staff and teacher salaries.
Appetizers will be served during the silent auction beginning at 5 p.m., and the dinner and program are from 6 to 8 p.m. The speakers will recognize guests of honor, including Bill Colbeck, a former administrator at Morning Son, and Suzy Hames, who was instrumental in the founding of the school.
Alumni and current students will provide music for the evening, principal Dessica Veum will give an update on new happenings at Morning Son and a short video will show how lives have been impacted by the school.
A Christian elementary school for preschool though sixth grade, Morning Son has served families of Otter Tail County and surrounding areas since 1984. The school began with a small group of neighborhood children attending preschool and kindergarten in the home of Steven and Suzy Hames.
It transformed over the years and eventually became an interdenominational ministry of the First Church of the Nazarene. The school is accredited by the Minnesota Nonpublic School Accrediting Association and is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International.
“The emphasis on the whole event is looking back at the 25 years and what has been done and what is going to be done in the future,” Seay said.
