No jeggings on this short body [UPDATED]Published 12:50pm Wednesday, October 20, 2010 Updated 12:51pm Wednesday, October 20, 2010
OK, I for one am happy to see the “hip-hugger” jean fashion on its way out. They were acceptable when I was in seventh-grade and slender, but not so much now as I approach my 50th decade of life, with about 30 (I’m being rather conservative here) pounds on my 5-foot-2-inch frame.
Several years ago, in an effort to find a comfortable pair of jeans, I purused the men’s section at our local Herberger’s and was dismayed to learn that the jean size that worked for me indicated I was a short, fat man.
My daughter has tried to get me to wear the fashionable hip-hugging jeans for several years, and though I have a couple pair, I can’t say they are flattering on me. Given that I carry that extra weight (translated to flab, not muscle), I have a “roll” or “tire” — the modern term is “muffin top” — that protrudes over the top of the jeans. Finding a top to hide that roll is difficult.
The newest fashion trend is a combination of jeans and leggings, called jeggings — two separate clothing items that fashion designers believe take the best of both.
Skinny jeans — our piece of comfort clothing — were popular for a long time, and leggings, which not everyone should wear by the way (and I’m one who should abstain), were also comfortable. Jeggings takes the heavier fabric of jeans to cover some of the body’s curvy flaws, with a stretchy material like what might be found in leggings for comfort.
Still, most of us shouldn’t be rushing out to buy a pair anytime soon. Unless my exercise program becomes wildly successful, I sure won’t be donning a pair anytime soon.Tags: fashion, jeggings
