Two Fergus Falls high school students have been suspended after firearms intended for hunting were discovered in their vehicles while parked Monday on school grounds.traditions

Police liaison officer Kevin Sonstebo was patrolling a school parking lot at Kennedy Secondary School and checking for parking permits when he noticed firearms stored in two different pickup trucks, High School Principal Dean Monke said.

“They’re great young men, they just didn’t make a good choice in relation to having those firearms here on school property,” he said.

Inside one vehicle was a Savage Model 99C and a Remington Model 772, a police report stated. In the other vehicle was a Remington Model 870 and Winchester Model 70. Open boxes of ammunition also were in both vehicles, and were taken into possession by police.

Monke said the students had no negative intentions, but Minnesota State Statute states that firearms cannot be in vehicles on school grounds.

The two upperclassmen were suspended and will be re-admitted to school pending parent conferences.

“It’s just a great reminder to all of us that there are specific laws that indicate that for no reason whatsoever can firearms be brought on to school property,” Monke said. “It’s a good reminder that we need to be diligent in how we transport our firearms.”
