Community members are invited to enjoy pie and good music at the upcoming holiday band concert.

The Fergus Falls High School bands and jazz ensembles will present a Holiday Pops Concert on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the new Gold Gym at Kennedy Secondary School.

Featured performing groups will be the Varsity Band and Jazz II, directed by Scott Kummrow, and the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz I, directed by Jim Iverson.

A wide variety of entertaining music including holiday and patriotic songs, Broadway show tunes and swing era music will be performed in an informal atmosphere. Pie, coffee, popcorn and other various treats will be served throughout the evening during the entertainment.

“It’s a little less formal,” Iverson said. “It’s almost like a nightclub atmosphere where people can visit and enjoy the music.”

Some of the pieces they’ll perform include “Armed Forces Salute” and a medley of all of the songs from “Rent.”

Senior Katie Swiontek, who plays flute, said Iverson picks good music and makes class interesting.

“We play good music for every concert,” she said during wind ensemble rehearsal. “He picks music that challenges us, so then we have to work really hard at it, and I think it ends up better in the concert if you play something that you have to work at a lot.”

Trombone player Caleb Prazak agreed, saying he likes the music selection because they try to pick songs the audience may be familiar with.

“I like the song selection and Mr. I’s a great teacher,” the senior said. “He’s really passionate about band, and it’s just lots of fun. We have a good time in there.”

Admission for the Holiday Pops Concert is free.
