Annual meeting is in May
Published 11:56am Friday, November 26, 2010As I write this on Monday (the 22nd), it appears there is no longer any question — we will have winter this year and it seems the snow which we received yesterday is definitely here to stay.
By the time you read this, Thanksgiving will be in the past which means it’s time to start thinking about Christmas.
And that’s what the Red Hats are doing. On Thursday, Dec. 2, at 9:30 a.m., they will meet at Debbie’s Kitchen for Christmas brunch.
If you are a Senior Center member, you are invited to join this enthusiastic group who acknowledge that although “aging is inevitable and getting old is optional, fun is (absolutely) manditory!”
Red Hats embrace the aging process with laughter and learning.
The annual meeting of the Senior Citizens Program takes place in May. Planning ahead, the Nominating Committee is now actively seeking candidates for the Board of Directors. Five directors’ terms expire and another will be voted on to complete the two year term vacated by a director.
The following are points that interested candidates should consider
Board members:.
n are elected to serve three year terms with a limit of two successive terms.
n are required to attend monthly board meetings which are generally held on the second Wednesday of the month.
n may be terminated for six absences in a row.
n attend an orientation class, help with fund-raisers and serve on at least one committee.
n must be committed to the organization, be trustworthy and honest, be able to communicate effectively, be open-minded and fair, be gracious and considerate, be able to listen and solve problems,demonstrate patience and understanding toward others.
n are approved for placement on the ballot by the Board of Directors, not the Nominating Committee.
One of the frustrations of aging is diminished vision. I suspect many of our members have encountered this problem in varying degrees. But, I wonder how many are aware of the “Reading Machine” in our library at the Center. It is really quite amazing. It can help you read anything from your mail to a novel. Type can be magnified to any size to make it readable. Another interesting and important feature is the ability to change from black print on white background to white print on black background which can sometimes make a definite difference in ability to read. Visit our library and take a look. This may be just what you need.
Finally, with all the grocery shopping for the holidays, it is probably a good time to remind everyone to save your SunMart grocery receipts and bring them to the Senior Center. When the total of all receipts received adds up to $150,000, the Center receives $1,000 for our Activity Fund from SunMart. Currently, we are well on our way to the top. We have a total of $124,161. Just $25,839 to go.
