Otter’s player of the year: The Team

The Fergus Falls girls basketball team held its awards banquet at Ten Mile Steakhouse on Sunday night. Varsity and JV awards were announced. The Otters girls were 23-4 on the season and 17-1 in the Central Lakes Conference, winning the conference title. They were second in the Section 8AAA tournament. The JV team was 19-5 and also finished 17-1 in the CLC, winning the unofficial CLC JV conference title.

Named to the Central Lakes Conference all-conference team were Mariah Monke, Anna Monke and Sydney Schultz. The Otters also received three honorable mention designations for Haylie Zenner, Hanna Swenson and Brianna Rasmusson.

The most valuable player award was given to the team as a whole, based on the significant contributions of all players in varsity games, JV games and on the practice floor. All 17 varsity players received letter awards.

The most valuable offensive player award went to Brianna Rasmusson and the defensive player award to Haylie Zenner. Michaela Hauck received the hardest worker award and Carly Ouren the spirit award. Laura Gaustad received the most valuable practice player award. In the statistical categories, Mariah Monke received three awards for most points scored in the season, most rebounds and most blocked shots. Mariah also received recognition for reaching the 1,000 point milestone in her career. Brianna Rasmusson received two awards for most assists and most steals.

Captains Michaela Hauck and Mariah Monke each received captain’s medals for their team leadership.

Each player also received a conference championship medal for winning the CLC title.

For the JV, the offensive player award went to Kalea Hatlewick and the defensive award to Devonie Smith. The spirit award was shared by Carly Ouren and Michaela Hauck. The hustle award and most valuable practice player award went to Sam Velde. Taylor Bach received the coach’s award. Kristin Traiser was awarded the most improved player recognition.

In the statistical category, Sam Velde received the leading season rebounder award while Kaitlin Capouch received the single game rebounding award. Nikki Ellingson was the leading assist award recipient and Devonie Smith the leading steals, both game and season, award recipient. Kalea Hatlewick received recognition for tying the Otter record with 8 three-pointers in one game.
