Post Mothers’ Day Blog: Part 1 [UPDATED]
Published 5:58pm Thursday, May 12, 2011 Updated 6:41pm Thursday, May 12, 2011Happy belated Mothers’ Day. I hope all the mothers out there got a nice gift from their sons/daughters.
A lot to talk about once again. I was thinking about breaking this up into a two-parter because I wanted to address one thing at length.
First, lets start with the NBA playoffs. The Spurs and Lakers have both been bounced from the tournament. San Antonio is never a sexy pick to win the NBA championship, but for a while there they seem to get the job done. I can’t ever say I was a Tim Duncan fan and have Manu and Tony Parker never made the Spurs standout. Greg Popovich may be a great coach, but during their title runs I kind of got sick of hearing about him.
The Lakers were swept in four games by the….Dallas Mavericks? That must be typo right? Dirk Nowitski will actually get a shot at winning an NBA title. What ever happened to saying Dirk isn’t tough enough or Mark Cuban is only building a team to get to the playoffs, not win an NBA title? I wish the Mavs the best from here on out. I would love to see the most despise owner in the NBA (mostly because he acts like a fan, not an owner) and one of the best foreign players ever get a ring.
Enough with the Mavs, we really need to talk about how bad the Lakers looked. Kobe looks like he is wearing out. The great “airness” started his second 3-peat at the age of 32, but Bryant seems to be struggling at the same age. I will give it up to Kobe, he only is one ring away from earning as many as Jordan, but he also didn’t retire in the beginning of his prime and again towards the end of his prime and comeback and make a lousy team viable for two years. Yep, asterisk.
Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum decided to play like the 1980s Pistons in the last game of the Western Conference semifinals. I thought Bill Lambeer and Dennis Rodman were out there bangin’ against Larry Bird and Robert Parrish.
Phil Jackson also didn’t get to ride off into the sunset the way he had planned. I have never understood why a coach would threaten to retire. Joe Paterno has coached for over 50 years. Jackson is the most successful head coach in NBA history and he wanted to walk away? What does that say about the shape of the Lakers.
The Miami Millionaire’s were about to knock off the 3 amigos (I was hoping Garnett, Pierce and Allen would have made a move in the stock market so I could call them the Boston Billionaires). The team that inspired the heat was served a cold hard loss. Hey Kevin, do you really think you should’ve help LeBron make the decision on where to go. Sounds like bashing a team that helped make you a star isn’t such a good idea. I think LeBron even learned that with his supposed ‘apology.’ I guess in my honest opinion I got sick of Minnesota fans saying “I hope KG wins a title, he deserves it.” No he doesn’t. The dude crippled our salary cap for many years. I never heard him say he would take a paycut, all I heard was “You need to get some guys around me.” Then he turns around and says he regrets staying in Minnesota as long as he did, I guess that makes me bitter.
So my forgone conclusion on the NBA is the Heat vs. the Mavs. LeBron will get his ring (although I will be rooting feverishly against it).
On the baseball front, the Twins are still struggling to find last season’s success. I don’t know if they will be able to turn it around this season sports fans. I guess its time to doubt them, rather than say “they’ll pull out of it.” Just think, it will be that much better when you are wrong.
Albert Pujols gave a great big man-hug to the GM of the Cubs. Cardinals fans should be worried, but it could also be a ploy. When you look at the landscape of sports, everyone still wants the glory days of players playing on one team their entire career. Pujols might not get as much backlash as LeBron did for leaving Cleveland but be prepared for the worst. Like many who hate Alex Rodriguez, if Pujols should leave St. Louis, I predict the same hatorade to be served to 29 different fan bases in fruit punch flavor disdain.
