Smokin’ Iron set for this weekend [UPDATED]
Published 10:21am Thursday, June 16, 2011 Updated 12:22pm Thursday, June 16, 2011The ninth annual Smokin Iron Truck and Tractor Pull will attract people from near and far this weekend in Ottertail. Events get underway at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, on the southwest side of town.
Gates open at 4 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday. There will be many food and beverage vendors to choose from. Ottertail’s Smokin Iron Truck and Tractor Pull is an official member of the National Tractor Pullers Association (NTPA).
Kathy and Terry Wagenman, who head Smokin Iron, are among 125 volunteers who work before, during and after the event. The Ottertail Business Persons Association organizes the annual Smokin Iron Truck and Tractor Pull.
“Each volunteer brings something to the table in the way of mechanical ability or other expertise,” said Kathy Wagenman. “That’s important to the success of this annual event.”
The NTPA sets the standard in the pulling industry for safety and competition rules.
Super Farm Tractors (SFT) are closest to off the farm workhorses as part NTPA competition. Engine size is limited to 640 cubic inches, using the OEM manifold and heads for that brand engine. Modified four-wheel-drive trucks are the only “naturally aspirated” division in NTPA competition. They utilize both rear and front wheels to pull.
