Arena tax still in play [UPDATED]

Fergus Falls city staff will be keeping a sharp eye out, but it appears that the city’s half-cent sales tax to pay for the new ice arena will still be in the final budget bills passed by Minnesota lawmakers.

“I talked to (City Administrator) Mark Sievert yesterday, and that should be safe,” Rep. Bud Nornes said of the tax. He added that Governor Mark Dayton’s requirement that policy issues be stripped from the budget bills shouldn’t apply to the sales tax.

“This is finance and part of the tax bill,” Nornes commented. “We have to watch it and make sure, but I’m confident it will be in the final bill.”

If approved by the Legislature and Dayton, the tax is expected to pay for the ice arena in about four years, after which it would be required to end.
