Joel Myhre / Daily Journal: Thunderstorms that passed south lit the sky green over the north side of Fergus Falls Sunday evening. Between heat and storms, the area was a hotspot for extreme weather over the weekend.

Heat warning issued for area

The hot, sticky weather in Fergus Falls and all around Minnesota isn’t expected to let up any time soon.indirect

With a high predicted around 90 degrees, forecasters expect the heat index to climb as high as 105 in Fergus Falls today.

The wind won’t be of much help to stay cool today either, as it should only reach around 5 mph.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for central and southern Minnesota, including the Fergus Falls area, through 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The weather is only going to get warmer tomorrow and Wednesday, with highs expected to reach around 93 degrees both days. Fortunately the wind is also expected to pick up, bringing a much needed breeze to anyone who has to be outside.

Extreme heat in this area always brings with it the threat of dangerous thunderstorms.

There was a severe thunderstorm warning in the Elbow Lake, Grant County area last night, but no damage was reported, said officials from the Grant County sheriff’s office.

The Center for Disease Control recommends air-conditioning as the number one protective factor against heat-related illness and death. During conditions of extreme heat, spend time in locations with air-conditioning such as shopping malls, public libraries, or public health sponsored heat-relief shelters in your area. It is also important to drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages and increase your fluid intake, regardless of your activity level.
