Fort Juleson built in response to rumor of Indian attack

Fort Juelson is located in Tordenskjold Township about two miles east of Underwood.
A flag pole can be seen on the site north of Hwy 210. The earthen fort was built in July 1876 in response to rumors of an eminent Indian attack.
Fear of harm resulted in a number of settlers leaving the area but a storekeeper suggested the settlers band together and build a defensive fortification under leadership of the Civil War veterans, Hans Juelson and Berge O. Lee.
The remains of the sod barricade are still visible on this site.
Clifford S. Knutson of Fergus Falls is the author of Fort Juelson and the Indian Scar of 1876. Cliff will be the guest speaker at the Otter Tail County Historical Society on Monday, July 11 at noon. Cliff will talk about the historic site which has become the property of Otter Tail County. This is a free and open to the public program.

General admission to the historical society is $4/adults, $1/ages 5-11. Members and children 4 and under are free. Large group tours are welcome. Guided tours can be arranged in advance. Meeting space is available. Extended museum hours through August: 9-5 Monday through Friday and 9-2 Saturday (exhibit gallery only).
