Vining on list of possible post office closings [UPDATED]
Published 10:50am Wednesday, July 27, 2011 Updated 11:03am Wednesday, July 27, 2011The Vining and Norcross post offices are among the 88 Minnesota locations the financially ailing Postal Service has added to the list of those being considered for closing.
The agency said Tuesday it will study 3,653 local offices, branches and stations for possible closing. Many of those may be replaced by village post offices in which postal services are offered in local stores, libraries or government offices.
“We don’t have a lot of details, and it’s our understanding that the proposed closing list will now be carefully reviewed before final decisions are made,” said Vining Postmaster Phyllis Nyberg. “Coming under review doesn’t necessarily mean an office will close.”
Nyberg has served as postmaster in Vining since 2004. She has worked at the local post office since the mid-1990s.
For Vining residents and business owners, it’s a wait-and-see situation.
“I haven’t heard much about the proposed closings,” said long-time Vining Palace owner Glenn Whiting. “Hopefully, whatever is decided, we’ll have postal service of some type in town.”
Minnesota Postal Service spokesman Peter Nowacki said the list includes 88 sites out of 882 total. In addition to Vining and Norcross, other post offices in west central Minnesota on the list include Comstock, Kent, Wolverton and Georgetown.
