County to apply for FEMA flood grant [UPDATED]

Otter Tail County, through the County Highway Department, is collecting data that will be forwarded to FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). The goal is to obtain federal funding assistance to help offset expenses related to high water issues in 2011.

Last week FEMA officials spent time in Otter Tail County, conducting a field inspection.

“Reimbursement claims will include expenses along three county roadways,” said County Engineer Rick West, “and at water pumping stations.”

Specific county highways impacted by high water include Highways 112 and 7 in Western Township, in the extreme southwestern area of Otter Tail County, and Highway 118, north of Elizabeth and west of State Highway 59.

Water pumping reimbursement includes work along Highways 10 and 29. Sandbagging expenses also would be reimbursed. Water pumping is part of FEMA Category B, said West, and roadway expense reimbursement would be part of FEMA Category C.

“FEMA officials conducted a detailed review of flooding sites and had an in-depth field inspection while they were here last week,” said West.
