Public meeting on police station needs tonight [UPDATED]

The Fergus Falls city council is holding a public meeting on a proposed new police station today from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Among the topics of discussion will be whether to build the building now or wait, as well as where to build the facility.

Different options include a brand new building across from city hall, the former site of U Motors near I-94, or the old U.S. Bank building downtown.

Space has been an issue for the police department for many years, but it was brought to the forefront last fall, when the department was forced to move from its former space in the Otter Tail County Courthouse to the old Lighthouse Energy building on Friberg Avenue.

The facility is too small for the department’s needs, forcing them to operate out of three different locations around town and depriving them of traditional interrogation and evidence rooms.
