Woodland speaker talks about the importance of Bible memorization [UPDATED]
Published 9:48am Friday, August 12, 2011 Updated 11:54am Friday, August 12, 2011Memorizing even a few passages from the Bible is a challenge for many people. Tom Meyer, who spoke Aug. 3 at Woodland Baptist Church in Fergus Falls, has memorized more than 10 complete books of the Holy Bible.
In Fergus Falls, he recited many of the famous Old Testament stories from memory, including Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Daniel and the Lion’s Den.
“I live for speaking at worship services, Sunday school, schools, camps and conferences,” said Meyer, “sharing my ministry of dramatically interpreting the Holy Scriptures from memory. ”
His profession is through Wordsower Ministries. Meyer and his wife, Sarah, travel from city to city throughout the United States, speaking the Holy Bible from memory for his non-profit organization. Their residence is St. Cloud when they are not on the road.
Part of the proceeds of this unusual ministry go to founding and funding Christian orphanages, schools, and widows’ programs in West Africa, India, and Haiti.
Meyer quotes Matthew Henry by stating that God’s Word is a treasure, “worth laying up, and there’s no laying it up safely but in our hearts. If we have it only in our houses and hands, enemies may take it from us.
“If only in our heads, our memories may fail us. But if our hearts be delivered into the mould of it, and the impressions of it remain on our souls, it is safe.”
Meyer has taught and ministered the past six years with Wordsower, a ministry founded 25 years ago. Wordsower exists to help people speak the Word of God from memory in churches around the world.
“Wordsower tells the books of the Bible from memory in the church and, with the money raised, supports the Christian orphans and widows in West Africa,” said Meyer, who has served with Wordsower in Israel. “It’s a unique and irregular way to preach the gospel. It really widens the attention span of people compared to giving a regular sermon, when parts of the congregation tend to daydream or quibble with the interpretation of the preacher.”
Meyer said his philosophy is simple.
“I’m simply reciting the Bible,” he said. “In this way, I can speak the Word in power in the different local churches in spite of their theological differences. We want to get Christians excited about memorizing the Word of God.”
