PR man sentenced for thefts [UPDATED]Published 9:52am Wednesday, August 17, 2011 Updated 11:55am Wednesday, August 17, 2011
A 19-year-old Pelican Rapids man was sentenced Friday for his part in a series of thefts from cars at the WestRidge Mall in the winter and spring of 2010.
Aldin Nezirevic was convicted of felony theft, and had charges of first degree criminal damage to property and tampering with a motor vehicle dropped.
He must spend 30 days in jail, 5 years of supervised probation, and he was fined $1,000.
He and a juvenile male also implicated in the thefts must share the burden of $1,684.23 in restitution.
Court records state that Nezierevic and the juvenile were arrested on March 12, 2010 after a city resident tipped off police about a suspicious car.
When interviewed by police Nezierevic admitted to being behind several thefts from cars in the WestRidge Cinema parking lot, as well as a couple from other parts of Fergus Falls, within a five-month period. However, he claimed only to be a lookout and driver for the thefts, while the juvenile actually committed the break-ins, often smashing in windows to get to items.
The juvenile was also interviewed and initially denied involvement, but he eventually admitted taking part.
During the investigation, police also viewed the text message history of Nezirevic’s cell phone, finding several messages about going to Fergus Falls, looking for money and breaking car windows.
In all, it’s estimated that the pair stole $2,052.72 in items, including everything from cash to electronics to clothing.Tags: Pelican Rapids, theft
