Siems a staple at PLGC tourneys

Participation in the annual Pot-O-Gold and Labor Day Classic at the Pebble Lake Golf Course never grows old for Dave Siems. He’s been a participant in most of the events since 1970.

“This is a fun time, and something we look forward to every year,” said Siems.

He took over from the late George Jurgens in running the annual putting contest, associated with the fall golf event, which will be held Saturday evening.

“George did a great job with the putting contest, and it’s a privilege to run this event in his honor,” said Siems. “The Jurgens family donated the outside deck, adjacent to the clubhouse, also in honor of George.”

The putting contest is held after the long drive contest on Saturday.

To begin with, the person on the putting green shoots at a 12-inch hole that’s two inches deep. With the second shot, the golfer aims for hole two on the green with a target that’s four feet in diameter. The third shot is anything but easy.

“For shot number three, the golfer on the green will shoot toward a regular hole, about 15 feet away,” said Siems. “If more than one golfer makes the third shot, we have a playoff. The winner receives a prize of money.”

The average number of participants in the putting contest is about 150 per year. This year, however, Siems says the total number could approach 200.

As for the regular golf event itself, Siems will be part of the 2011 Labor Day Classic. His partner will be Scott Schauff. These golfers have handicaps from 7 to 16. Siems and Schauff tee off at 11:10 a.m. Saturday. Their opponents in match play will be the team of Dan Walvatne and Duane Stigen.

Pot O’ Gold participants have handicaps of six and below.

In 1994 Siems and partner Mark Sleeper took second place in the Pot O’ Gold. He and partners took second place, twice, in previous Labor Day Classic competition.

Sixteen two-person teams will participate in this year’s Pot O’ Gold and the same number will participate in the Labor Day Classic. The event runs Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Pebble Lake Golf Course
